Is my phone eSIM-ready and unlocked?

3 min read · Updated September 13, 2026
To use an eSIM you need two things: ① your phone must support eSIM, and ② it must have no carrier lock (SIM lock). If your settings menu has "Add eSIM", it's supported; and a phone you activated and use normally in your home country usually has no lock.

The two conditions

  • ① An eSIM-capable model — the hardware must support eSIM
  • ② No carrier lock — a lock (SIM lock) can block adding another line

How to check eSIM support

iPhone: it's supported if Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data) has "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan". Galaxy: it's supported if Settings → Connections → SIM manager has an eSIM entry. If the menu isn't there, it likely isn't supported — but since this can vary by launch region and software, also check the manufacturer's specs for your exact model number.

How to check for a carrier lock

On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and check "Carrier Lock": if it says "No SIM restrictions", there's no lock. Devices bought overseas, used, or under contract may be locked; if you're unsure, the accurate way is to ask the carrier that originally sold or activated the device about its "SIM lock (unlock) status".

Notes on unlocked and used phones

  • Some overseas-edition models may have no eSIM or a different structure
  • Devices under a carrier contract or installment plan may be locked
  • The surest approach is checking the settings menu plus asking the carrier

FAQ

How can I quickly check whether my phone supports eSIM?
On iPhone, look for "Add eSIM" in Settings → Cellular; on Galaxy, look for an eSIM entry in Settings → Connections → SIM manager. If the menu isn't there, it likely isn't supported, but since this can vary by launch region and software, also check the manufacturer's specs by model number.
How do I know if there's a carrier lock?
On iPhone, check "Carrier Lock" in Settings → General → About. If it says "No SIM restrictions", there's no lock. For other devices or products bought overseas, the accurate way is to ask the carrier that originally sold or activated it.
Do budget carrier (MVNO) phones work with eSIM too?
If the device supports eSIM and has no lock, MVNO users can add a travel eSIM as well. Just leave your existing MVNO line as it is and add a data-only eSIM.
