Troubleshooting
eSIM not working? Fixes by symptom
5 min read · Updated September 13, 2026
When an eSIM isn't working, it's usually one of three things: ① install (QR scan) failed, ② it won't activate, or ③ it's installed but data won't connect. First figure out which state you're in, then check, in order, the data line assignment, data roaming, and manual network selection.
Symptom 1 · The QR code won't scan or won't install
- Turn up screen brightness and display the QR on another device's screen to scan it
- If it still won't work, install manually (enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code directly)
- If "already used" appears, first check whether it's already installed in your phone's list of lines → if not, ask the provider to check
- Installation needs Wi-Fi — retry on a stable network
Symptom 2 · It won't activate
- Whether the installed eSIM line is turned on (activate the line in settings)
- Check the activation timing — if it's "activate on connecting locally," it may not work before you arrive
- If it won't connect to the network automatically, select the network manually
Symptom 3 · It's installed but data won't connect
- Set the travel eSIM as the line used for data
- Turn on data roaming for that line (needed to use the local network)
- Toggle airplane mode off and on, or reboot
- If it still won't work, check the APN settings (the value the provider gives)
What not to do carelessly
Deleting an eSIM often means you can't reinstall it with the same QR code. Even while troubleshooting, check with the provider whether reinstallation is possible before erasing the profile.
FAQ
My QR code shows "already used."
First check whether that eSIM is already installed in your phone's list of lines in settings. If it is, just turn that line on and use it instead of reinstalling. If it's not in the list or the error keeps appearing, send the error screen and your order details to the provider and ask them to check.
The signal bars show but the internet doesn't work.
First check whether the line used for data is set to the travel eSIM and whether data roaming is on for that line. Then check your remaining data, validity period, and APN. For details, see the "when data/internet won't connect" guide.
What if it still doesn't work after rebooting?
Try selecting the network manually and check the APN value (provided by the provider). If it still won't work, it's quicker to contact the provider's customer support with your ICCID (the eSIM identification number).
