Can you use a travel eSIM as a hotspot?

November 4, 2026

Sometimes you want to connect a laptop or tablet through your travel eSIM. You might also want to share with a travel companion's phone. But whether hotspot use is allowed or blocked is hard to tell from the product page alone.

In short: many travel eSIMs let you use a hotspot (tethering), but the conditions differ by plan. Some allow it with no limit, some set aside a separate allowance for hotspot use, and some block it entirely. So the first thing to check is whether the plan you picked allows hotspot use and whether it has a separate limit.

Why does hotspot support differ by plan?

A hotspot shares the data your phone receives with other devices. For a provider, this can mean more data use than one person browsing, so each plan sets its own policy. Some plans treat hotspot data the same as regular data and set no separate limit, while others cap how much you can use over the hotspot each day. In particular, some unlimited plans set a separate hotspot limit, so it is safer not to assume that "unlimited" also means unlimited hotspot.

Does the hotspot use my own data?

In most cases, hotspot data comes out of the same allowance your phone uses. The connected laptop does not get a separate allowance; your phone and the laptop share one pool. Unless the plan states otherwise, you can treat it this way.

One thing to watch. Laptops and tablets tend to use data faster than a phone. Background updates and cloud sync can run through your allowance quicker than expected, so turning off automatic updates on the connected device for a while can save data.

How do you turn on the hotspot after installing?

Menu names can differ a little by device.

  • iPhone: in Settings, open Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join.
  • Android: in Settings, turn on the hotspot (or tethering) option, or turn it on from the quick settings tile.

The hotspot follows the line currently set to use data. So on a phone that runs two lines, check that the data line is set to your travel eSIM and that data roaming is on for that line. If the data line is set to your home number, the hotspot will use your home number's data.

FAQ

The hotspot turns on, but the connected device has no internet.
Check that the data line on your phone is set to the travel eSIM and that data roaming is on for that line. If the phone itself works but only the hotspot fails, the plan may limit or block hotspot use.
Does hotspot data come out of my allowance?
On most plans, yes. Your phone and the connected device share the same allowance. Some plans set a separate hotspot limit, so check the plan details.
My plan is unlimited. Is the hotspot unlimited too?
Not always. Even an unlimited plan may allow only a set amount of hotspot use per day. Before you buy, check the hotspot conditions in the plan details or terms.

If you plan to use a hotspot, check first whether the plan you picked allows it and whether it has a separate limit. After installing, you only need to confirm that the data line is set to your travel eSIM. Pick the plan that fits you, and have a great trip.
