For 1–2 travelers who mainly need data, an eSIM is usually the cheapest of the three. With more people or existing roaming perks the answer can change, so compare the total for your own trip in the table below.

When each one wins
- Solo or couple trip, mostly data → an eSIM is usually the cheapest and easiest
- A family or group sharing one data pool → one shared pocket Wi-Fi can be cheaper (but you must stay together)
- A very short trip where setup feels like a hassle → roaming is the simplest (but pricey)
The catch with pocket Wi-Fi
It looks cheap when several people split it, but you have to carry the device everywhere and it cuts out when the battery dies. If your group splits up, only one person has internet. With an eSIM, everyone is online on their own phone.

Can I just share an eSIM by tethering instead of using pocket Wi-Fi?
You can. If you pick an eSIM that allows tethering (hotspot), you can share your phone like a Wi-Fi router. Some products block tethering, though, so check before buying.
