What is an eSIM (esim), exactly?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you install a plan with a QR code, so travelers can keep their existing number (physical SIM) and simply add one more line for local data.
What is an eSIM?
"eSIM" is short for "embedded SIM", a chip built into your phone that downloads a carrier profile as software. Unlike a physical SIM you swap in and out, you can add or switch a line just by scanning a QR code or entering a few details.

Why travelers use eSIMs
- Your existing number (SIM) stays in, so you still get calls and texts, only data runs on the local eSIM

What you need to use one

Can an eSIM be reused?
It depends on the product. If it supports top-ups (rebuying) or adding a new plan, you can keep using an eSIM you already installed; otherwise you install a new one. Plan expiry, deleting an eSIM, and transferring to another device are all different situations, so check the provider's guidance before buying.
